An Interview with Mojo!

Published on May 29th, 2011

Yesterday we managed to catch Guido ‘guidson’ Gijsbers for a little interview. He and his team ‘Mojo Amsterdam’ will be attended the BYOC competition at DreamHack Summer and try to get into the Main Tournament. We spoke a little with Guido about his past adventures in real life and the scene itself.

Hello guidson, you are probably one of the most well known CounterStrike 1.6 players in the Netherlands, partly thanks to your participation in Secret Story. How is it to come back from that and get to play again.

The Secret Story adventure was one to never forget. The five weeks that I was locked in the luxurious villa in Portugal were very strange but entertaining for me as a person. I’ve met some great people during my 13 weeks of Secret Story. Every Thursday I’ve had the weekly liveshow and during the whole week I was Twittering like crazy to keep in touch with my fans. My teammates were quite stunned when they saw me on TV but when I came back we immediately played some praccs and attended The Party 9. We ended up playing the finals and beating the likes of LowLandLions, Antwerp Aces and Rodcad. I hadn’t played for more than 2 months neither did my teammates. It felt very weird to get my normal life back, but I had loads of cool comments of everyone. When I was going out during The Party 9 people hugged me and both girls and boys passing by and saying they respected me because of all the things that happened during my Secret Story adventure. It made big impact on me.

Last April you went to The Party with your team Mojo Amsterdam. While no-one expected you guys to get to the top 3 you actually finished second. How was that experience?

It was literally crazy! We attended the event as a mix I hadn’t played much with Han-G and lex0r, at the same time I didn’t touch a computer for two months or so. We played the groupstage fully confident and finished first in the groupstage with a stunning win over the “legends” of LowLandLions on Nuke (16-11)of which every member is playing for Team-NL. Next was Antwerp Aces, the Belgium powerhouse. They won the Dreamhack Qualifier two years in a row, but we beat them with huge numbers: 16-06. We felt incredible and were in some kind of spooky flow. Everything we did and expected was correct. We finally faced KaoS in the grand finale. But we lacked experience playing a final. Everything was going bad. We lost the first map with 16-10 and the second map with 16-06. I felt bad for going clubbing with faah and Han-G celebrating our success on Saturday night.

Alot of people in the scene are expecting Mojo to end up winning the BYOC competition at DreamHack Summer 2011, do you think you guys will be able to meet those expectations?

Yes and no. We could very well beat every single team in the BYOC, even LowLandLions and some strong Swedish mixteams. But we could also fail in the quarter-final of the BYOC and go home without any success. We need to focus every match and stay fit and sharp by sleeping well the first night and eat healthy. We are going to pracc from June, all the weeks after The Party we couldn’t play because I was still busy with Secret Story and Han-G was moving to a other city with his girlfriend and didn’t have any internet connection. We try to keep a low profile in both national and international scene so people will underrate us. We love the underdog position!

How do you prepare for an event like this?

We are playing 5 times a week from now on. Since The Party we didnt had any pracc with the complete lineup because of Han-G who recently moved out from Utrecht to Hilversum. I was quite busy with my exams, tazzie and Lex were really busy with work. We didn’t had one normal pracc. A few mixes on ESL and playing some Swedish cups. Individually we are playing a lot, which is one of our strenghts, our individual play. We also watch POV’s from international events, playing CSDM a lot and brush/gather with foreign players like Germans who play EPS. The German level is much higher than the Dutch, we dutch whine a lot and play more for fun. The Germans are constanly focussed even when they are playing a pickup, gather or brush. 110% focussed. This week we will start playing with our complete line-up and discuss some tactics. There is no bootcamp planned.

Last time you guys went to DreamHack was Winter 2009, then playing under another name. Did the line-up change much since then?

Wow! That’s way back. It was with the old Equiped lineup with stiffM, Tomik, xilo and flexehh, we ended up 8th in the BYOC by loosing to… So yeah, the line-up changed alot ;). I’m the only one left.

What do you think about the current CounterStrike situation with DreamHack. Last Winter the Main tournament had a lot more slots, and price money was also considerably higher. Do you expect CounterStrike 1.6 to eventually disappear forever?

I think Counterstrike 1.6 will loose eventually from newer FPS games. In 2012 we will finally see the end of 1.6 as one of the biggest competitive FPS games in the world. I don’t see a bright future for 1.6. Sponsors are cancelling and even the big names like WCG and ESWC won’t feature CS 1.6 in 2012. This will mark the end of the CS 1.6 era.

What does your family / girlfriend think of the fact you’ll be traveling all the way to Sweden just to play a computer game?

My girlfriend thinks that professional gaming is something big and should be taken serious. She’s supporting me very well and really likes the scene. The first time I’ve met her I already told about gaming, she was kinda stunned when I told her about arena’s in countries like Korea and Sweden where professional gamers are playing against each other with a huge crowd. Everyone of our team has a girlfriend who’s playing games except faah. He’s still single, so (game)girls out there ;)!

I would like to thank our sponsor Akasa for making this trip with Intel Pack4DreamHack possible. Next I would like to thank everyone at Gamelux for the “support” during Secret Story. You made me famous 😉 And last but not least thx to my teammates floren, julien, dannny and lex for having the most “funny” team ever. We are like a bunch of kids, hate it or love it. Haha! Lets rock ‘n roll @ Jonkoping bra boys!
