Day 2 eSports wrap up

Published on June 16th, 2014

It is finals day at DreamHack! Today the loot is divided. Titles are won. And champions are made. That said, let’s quickly look back at yesterday’s results and catch up to the present before the action gets heated again.

Aside from the main DreamHack tournaments at DreamHack, there’s also the Swedish Championship ESM. Anyone that knows the Swedish players, knows that they are among the best of Europe. Because of this, there are often excellent matches. After the early exits for the Fnatic DotA2 and CS:GO squads, team Fnatic really needed a win. And that’s exactly what they got. In the ESM SC2 tournament, it was Zanster taking the title. It took him 5 maps to overcome ThorZaIN.

Unfortunately, the Dutch are mostly done. Harstem actually took down two-time DreamHack champion StarDust, but had no luck versus TaeJa and Oz in the third group stage. In that same stage, uThermal met his match. Though MarineLorD was the odd man out in his group, uThermal fell to MaNa 2-1 in the winners bracket and again 2-1 in the second place match. MaNa is having a very strong tournament and is the only non-Korean left in the round of 8.

To everyone’s surprise, the Dutch player that made it the furthest was Sjaak. The 15 year old Intel Pack4DreamHacker had already shocked everyone by beating HyuN and HuK, but he wasn’t done yet. In group stage 3 Sjaak lost to Golden in the winners bracket 1-2 but then won the rematch in the second place match, knocking out Golden and earning himself a spot in the top 16. Unfortunately, there he met TaeJa and was unable to advance, but he clearly should be congratulated for this great result.

Team Liquid is having an extremely strong showing with 3 players in the top 8 of the SC2 tournament and Amaz in the Hearthstone tournament. In addition to the earlier mentioned MaNa and TaeJa, HerO is also alive and kicking.

The last Dutch hope is actually in a different tournament altogether. ThijsNL has been looking extremely strong in the Hearthstone tournament and will be playing shortly in the first quarterfinal of the day now.
